Abstract |
Deflection and design equations for Vierendeel type coupled beams, which are composed of a floor beam in the upper modular unit and a overhead beam of the lower one coupled by steel plates in order to improve serviceability of multi-story modular building structures, are proposed in this paper. Semi-rigid end conditions of the coupled beams and sub-optimal locations of the coupling plates are assumed. Deflection equations of the coupled beams are derived using flexibility method with an additional aid of direct stiffness methods. Design equations for the upper limit of the flexibility and corresponding dimensions of the coupling plate that can restrict the beam deflection below a target value are proposed. Based on numerical analysis, coefficients of the design equation is calibrated, and the revised equation is proved to have considerable accuracy. |
