Abstract The purpose of this study is to analyze and evaluate the characteristics of outdoor thermal environment in summer and heat island potential of flat-type apartment houses and tower-type apartment houses using numerical simulation of all-surface-temperature of 3-dimension. On the base of August 5th, the hottest day of Seoul, after inputting a building condition on CAD, we calculated Mean Radiant Temperature and Heat Island Potential for two kind of apartments by the surface temperature. The result of MRT indicated that the tower-type apartment houses were better outdoor thermal comfort and HIP indicated the flat-type apartment houses 1.3℃ more highly tower-type apartment houses. Specially HIP of two apartments appears from 09:00 in 13:00 the temperature highly above of 9℃ and not only in the day but also in the night. Then it suggests that we needs countermeasure method for urban heat island in concrete apartment houses of typical residential types of urban.
