Abstract The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clip confinement effect and the behavior of concrete columns with clip-confined intermediate longitudinal bars. Six concrete columns(250㎜×250㎜) with stub were tested under high axial and reversed cyclic lateral loads. The experimental parameters were included the compressive strength of concrete(31MPa, 45MPa), the configuration of lateral ties(only perimeter ties, perimeter+cross ties) and with or without the clip. The clip confinement effects on the behavior of concrete columns were analyzed and evaluated. The test results showed that the clip caused the enhancement of strength and ductility of the concrete columns by preventing early buckling of longitudinal bars. The clip confinement effect reasonably corresponded to the confinement effect of the inner cross-ties. Although, further studies were required in the future, it was found that instead of hardly re-bar work of inner cross-ties, an easily re-bar work of clip could maintain the proper strength and ductility of concrete columns subjected to the earthquake type loadings.
