Abstract |
In this study total of six buckling-restrained braces (BRBs) were manufactured using a steel bar as a load-resisting core member and a hollow steel tube as restrainer to prevent global buckling of the core, and their performance under cyclic load was investigated. The gap between the core and the tube was filled with steel bars or mortar as fillers to prevent local buckling and the performance of the two different types of braces was compared. The test results showed that the performance of the BRB with discontinuous steel bars as filler material was not satisfactory, whereas the BRBs with continuous bars or mortar as filler material showed good performance when they were subjected to the loading protocol recommended by the AISC Seismic Provisions. It was observed that to ensure high cumulative ductility and energy dissipation the buckling strength of the external tube needs to be higher when steel bars are used as filler material than when mortar is used. |
