Abstract The aim of this thesis is to recognize various change of surfaces in contemporary architecture and investigate the possibilities of dynamic surfaces. The change of architectural surface is related to the change of society and the way of expression as well. To advance these studies, it is assumed that dynamic surface is recognized as the media making method which has depth as interface. It is also considered that the architectural surface is related to the development of contemporary technology. As a result of analysis of examples, dynamic surface as media for communication creates information and images and show these elements to the society by visual reiteration. Dynamic surface as self-respondence takes a role as organicism for interaction through seeking of value and quality of life. And dynamic surface as translucent boundary creates various boundary as user's choice, and expresses the boundary of pluralistic and nonstandard. Therefore, dynamic surface in contemporary architecture takes a role as the index which reflects various characteristics of society. It is verified that these tendencies influence contemporary architecture generated by the dynamic surface.
