Abstract The sustainable architecture that considers the health and amenity as well as influence of building for environmental preservation and harmony with surroundings is under lively discussion. The purpose of this study is to analyze the ecological architectural properties through the Shigeru Ban's work, find his understanding and methodology as sustainable architecture, and provide the feasible for future architecture. The study was progressed through the reference examination and the substance analysis. The eight representative architectures were selected for the substance. The following is the result. 1) The variable utilization of facade design; the big window opening, translucent material, and shutter for open and close momentarily were factors used on the facade for the natural lighting. The vertical or horizontal opening of the facade means that the communication with environment through the utilization of renewable energy, continuity between inside and outside space, and passive design by natural ventilation. 2) The reduction and circulation of resources; he designed his works for minimizing of environment load through the recycle material, reuse, variable and simple plan. 3) The regional characteristic; a shoji, a shitomido, and a shopping street as the Japanese traditional element and elements of Korean traditional architecture reflect a regional context.
