Abstract |
The concept of beauty in architecture has been changed and also its category has been incessantly extended. The sublime becomes the one of the major notions of contemporary aesthetics. The purpose of this study is to clarify aesthetic notion of sublime and its adoption in contemporary architecture. To do this, the history of sublime has been analyzed and classified by period. Jean Francois Lyotard is a one who developed the concept of sublime into contemporary concept. He appled his notion of sublime to avant-garde. And also it is able to explain characteristics of recent architectural works, especially of Rem Koolhass' works to the concept of sublime. Rem Koolhass' works represent bigness, formless and non-representation as modern characteristics of sublime. |
