This study aims to survey and figure out the philosophical meaning of metamorphosis in the Metabolism, an architectural movement group in Japan. The metamorphosis is the second concept of the Metabolism movement following after the first concept of the metabolism which represents the growth of the architectural building itself as if the building were the lives. The various meanings of metamorphosis are reconsidered from the several aspects of point view. The meaning of metamorphosis contains the ecological values contrary to the modern values, which is required in the 21 century architecture. Also it is the different and evolved concept of the functionalism as the extension of the TeamX movement. After analyzing the philosophical meaning of metamorphosis, several architectural projects were reviewed to explain the metamorphosis concept in concrete that could be helpful to solve the architectural design problems nowadays. |
