Abstract The purpose of this study is to analyse characteristics of change in Korea small town centers. Accordingly, this study analyzes 39 small towns in the whole country of Korea, and uses an on-the-spot survey data in 2005. The first step of study is to check out the range of spatial scope of city center. As a result, the types of small towns can be classified into four groups by the population scale. Each group has specific characteristics of city center's range and ratio of major and minor axis. This study operate on the regression analysis to make out change ratio of city center followed by population size. The result of analysis, one group of small town, which have people under 1,000, have linear or rectangular form which have the proportion of two or more to one. Another group of small town, which have people from 1,000 to 5,000, have a tendency to expand toward minor axis. The other group of small town, which have people more 5,000, have a form of square city center. To revitalize the small town, it is necessary to understand the phenomenon of small town and needs more useful study related to the policy.
