Abstract |
We describe the generative design methodology and its application through multi-agent system in architecture. This study is initiated based on the premise that the application of the Complex Adaptive System paradigm in science into the architectural domain can not only improve the productivity of designers but also lead to the innovative design at the end. With the aids of the information technology and production technology combined with this method, various kinds of design alternatives adjusted to the frequently changing design requirements is possible in a more flexible manner. As theoretical background, 'bottom-up' design process will be represented as comparative concept to the conventional 'top-down' design process. With the interdisciplinary concept, 'Complex Adaptive System', sought from other domains like biology, economy, etc. the usefulness and meaning of application to the architectural domain as a new method will be discussed. Parameterization and Mass-Customization in Computer Aided Architectural Design will be followed as technical perspectives. Case studies which generative design strategy was applied will be treated for theoretical background. After building the Complex Adaptive System framework, for implementation of this method, Gaudi's 'Casa Mila' is chosen as a case design, analyzed in order to model agents and environment using Java and design alternatives are generated. This study will eventually be embodied into a generalized 'Complex Adaptive Architectonic System.' |
