Abstract Sharing family meals together is shown to be most important in creating good family relations. The family meals help members show greater love and appreciation for each other so that they have been considered to be more important than ever before. Because the kitchen is a place where meals are prepared and family shares them together, it has been gradually regarded to play a major part in residential environment and its function also has been diversified. The purpose of this study is to provide information useful for planning the future kitchen space and to suggest the desirable aspects of resident-oriented kitchen space, by examining the changing kitchen space, its characteristics after legal apartment balcony extensions, and physical, residential and aesthetic effects of the kitchen space on residents. To achieve the purposes, this study was carried out by selecting middle-sized apartments with good family communication to analysing physical, residential and aesthetic effects of their kitchen space, and finding out if the kitchen space as a useful place for educating children can help improve the function of sociality and education.
