Abstract |
Passive energy dissipation devices (PEDD) are generally used to reduce structural responses caused by earthquake or wind loads. This study presents combined system of rotational friction damper connected to cables to enhance both seismic and progressive collapse resisting capacity of existing structures. To this end 3-, 6-, and 15-story RC moment frames were designed considering only gravity loads. Rotational friction dampers were designed according to the capacity spectrum method (CSM) to satisfy given performance objectives against seismic load. Nonlinear dynamic analysis results showed that the structures retrofitted by rotational friction dampers showed superior performance against seismic load especially in the 3-story structure. It was also observed that the retrofitted structures showed more stable behavior against progressive collapse. |
