Abstract Korean public housing has been provided with unstable financial support from the earlier times, resulting in small-sized and poorly equipped apartments. The government has been trying to meet the growing demand for public housing, but the available housing sites in the urban area are running short at the moment. The objective of this study is to suggest the extension remodeling of public rental housing for solving these problems, and examine the application of it. The schematic application of it was done on the case in District 3 of Donghong, Jeju in Korea, which has been selected for the pilot project for the government-funded research "Developing Aged-housing Remodeling Technology for Improving Structural and Equipment Performance" (C 105A1050001-05A0505-00110). Public housing has relatively been exposed to poor management, thus being more rapidly deteriorated than private sector housing. Dwelling conditions of it is growing worse, and the improvement of it is urgently needed. Its limited space has been the critical problem of it, so the proper extension types for it should be experimented and developed. This study adopts the extension types of remodeling developed in the previous research, which were drawn out from the inspection and analysis of private sector remodeling projects. As the current living standard calls for the universal design for all people, the main target users are set as aged and disabled people.
