Abstract The city has been growing with waterfront. In the early times, waterfront was an industrial space for economic growth of cities. But, nowadays this waterfront's meaning is changing. Waterfront is to be a good open space for the downtown that has lacked open spaces. And waterfront is not only the amenity space for citizen, but also support space and new space has development potential for overloaded downtown. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of waterfront design for downtown revitalization. Also, NYC Manhattan Waterfront, as the advanced example of waterfront renewal, shows how to design waterfront for downtown revitalization. This study is to review the NYC waterfront plan system, and then to analyze the techniques of waterfront design to focus on the downtown revitalization.
