Abstract This paper provides basic theories and numerical results for size optimization of dome structures. Genetic algorithm (GA) is adopted to find out the optimum size of the dome structures. The GA mimics the principles of nature and so the present design optimization process can gradually improve the structural design through the GA operations such as fitness, selection, crossover and mutation. In particular, we adopt the rebirthing technique to enhance the performance of generic GA for design optimization of spatial structures. The optimum member sizes of typical dome structures against external loads are investigated by using the proposed design optimization procedure. From numerical results, it is found to be that the GA with the rebirthing technique is useful and very effective to produce the optimum member size pattern for dome structures. Finally, we propose the present numerical tests as a benchmark test suite of dome structures for future research work.
