Abstract Recently, the use of various visual materials is increased in education facilities. Conventional controls of lighting environment have developed to find the appropriate conditions for work on the desk. But those could interfere with watching the screen in the classroom using visual materials. Especially, the use of a beam projector is greatly increasing in lecture rooms of university, but there are no proper guidelines, standards and criteria of design. Therefore, this study aims to provide the prefer illuminance level and illuminance distribution for the visual comfort in the classroom equipped with a screen and a beam projector. The illuminance was measured on five conditions commonly came out in the classroom. The surveys on the visual comfort were conducted to identify which the visual condition is good for studying. From the results of the surveys, it is known that the illuminance of the rear side of the classroom is higher than that of the front for the good vision. Also, the ratio of the maximum illuminance to the minimum within a screen is 1:3 or 1:4 for the good lighting environment to read the characters on the screen.
