Abstract In this paper, the material properties of ETFE membrane foil obtained from tensile test and its application to a cushion system are presented. The yield stress and the Young’s modulus of the foils with two different thicknesses are obtained through analyzing the stress-strain curves gained from the tensile tests. The cycle loading tensile tests at different stress and strain are carried out to investigate the elastic and plastic properties of ETFE foil. Also, to remove the air supply system in air cushion structures, this paper presents a new kind of ETFE foil spring cushion structures in which air is replaced by compressed springs. An experimental hall with a roof covered with the presented spring cushions system is designed and constructed and the validity of the new developed “spring cushion” structure system is examined.
