Abstract |
The Comparison between Maison Dalsace designed by Pierre Chareau and Villa Muller designed by Adolf Loos reveals the significant similarities of the interior spaces in spite of the clear difference of the envelopes of the buildings. The three common features of the interior spaces of these two houses are: 1) the highly articulated cladding of polychromic and diversified materials, 2) flexible or movable devices which are precisely conceived to support the specific activities of domestic life, and 3) intimacy of private spaces regardless of the expression to the exterior. Although they are not irrelevant to the intellectual tradition of structural rationalism and theory of Bekleidung, the dominant motif of design is rather the tangible and concrete interpretation of the actual life itself unfolded in the house than the abstract disciplines. The study suggests another conceptuation of the functionalism in order to interpret the Modern Movement in a new way, i.e., the subjective and concrete functionalism. |
