Abstract Community has emerged as an important issue in the area of urban planning, urban design and architecture. The purpose of this study was to analyze the neighborhood's walking environment affecting resident's sense of community. In the study, neighborhood environment and resident's social relation and other socio-demographic variables were used as explanation variables in a causal model. 321 subjects from 12 neighborhoods in seoul were selected as the final sample, and a statistical analysis was carried out by applying Hierarchical Linear Model. The results show that neighborhood's walking environment and resident's social relation have influence on resident's sense of community. Some of the major variables that are believed to be closely related to resident's sense of community includes quality of walking environment, safety of neighborhood, and access to convenience facilities as well as socio-demographic variables such as income, gender, job, housing type, period of dwelling. The conclusion provides some implications that neighborhood's walking environment would be a factor to affect to resident's sense of community.
