Abstract The aim of this paper is to analysis of design guideline theory and examined the role and necessity of design guideline. And look around the design guideline as urban design control method with overseas cases- Makuhari Bay Town in Chiba (Japan), Battery Park City in New York (USA), Mission Bay in San Francisco (USA)- are typical urban residential areas built according to design guidelines. “The Residential Design Guideline” is based on the survey focusing on the constitution of design guideline, contents and application present status over these three urban residential area. The conclusions of this paper are as followings: 1)The design guidelines should be considered as urban context, which is urban area-street(block)-building. 2)The contents of residential design guideline is quite related to master plan and site situations. 3)The elements of guidelines should be related to each other.
