Abstract The goal of this study is to improve the workshop usability for the international contest for city planning & design by carrying out analysis on the workshop held as part of International Idea Competition for Saemangeum Comprehensive Urban Development Concept and then drawing out its characteristics and tasks. As the way of conducting the study, an analysis was performed on those things such as the matters discussed, request for security, and the interim & final reports held up relevant to the workshop which has been held 3 times with 7 home and abroad participant teams in the international ideas competition. The drawn out results of the workshop are as follows. First, the greatest result obtained from the workshop is the rise of realizable possibility for every idea. Those plans which haven't gotten it from the discussion were excluded from the final plans while the selected plans were revised in the process of the discussion into more realistic and practicable ways. Second, the understanding of the present status has rise. It's attribute to the response, various data offering by the professional committee & workshop, proposal of function to introduce, major industries through home experts' consultation, expansion of the chances to make a field investigation. But an excessive offer of information set the participants in the competition to depend to much on the information provided. Third, the occurrence of PR effect home and abroad which was aided by the name value of the participants, inducement of the provincials into the debate for concept development which is part of workshop program, joining of professionals in various fields through symposium, opening of design program of the participant universities in expanding to multiple fields and multiple classes in the country and foreign countries holding durability.
