Abstract Intelligent environments are buildings and other physical settings that can automatically recognize the changing needs of their users and dynamically respond to them by adjusting some key environmental parameters. Unlike the currently common approach, which is based on systems theory, the approach proposed in this paper is based on dynamic, collaborative design: an intelligent environment is developed as a team-type organization of multiple intelligent agents that can sense immediate changes in its domain of responsibility and propose corrective measures by negotiating with other agents to form a collective response. The paper hypothesizes that this new approach can make intelligent environments more context-sensitive and dynamic to be more responsive to the environmental needs of multiple users.
