Abstract Human beings have been achieving the development of culture through urbanization and industrialization. However, the artificial change of nature and destruction of environment according to the process toward urbanization and industrialization have been the serious issues threatening the existence of human beings, not as simple issue to protect the nature. This study investigated the functions of outer cover of organism and how the outer cover of building controls the environmental influence, analyzed the design cases for outer covers of building and thus, examined how the outer cover of building copes with the environment. According to the results, in the same way as the outer cover of organism protects itself from external influence in environment and carries out the functions including adjustment of temperature and light and generation of energy, the outer cover of building also adjusts the environmental elements, light, heat and air, and so creates the comfortable environment inside a building. Furthermore, the outer cover of building has the potentials to be the major construction tool to keep the harmony with natural environment. In conclusion, if the natural circulation principle of outer cover of building is introduced through the research on how to apply the function to discern the specific substances such as exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide or block of ultraviolet rays observed on the outer cover of organism to the outer cover of building, the outer cover of building will be one of critical tools to provide the ecologically healthy and comfortable environment for human beings as the approach to cope with the environmental change.
