Abstract Looking around history of church architecture, there are many symbols and sacred images inside and outside in church architecture owing to emphasizing ceremony more than dogmatic aspects before religious Reformation. But after religious Reformation, Art was lacked behind by not emphasis of eyes but emphasis of ears, because of the early protestant and sacred image ruin movement of radical evangelical. Church architecture which changed by exclusion of decorative elements in Gothic Architecture made itself a concise form. Protestant increased trend which use symbol and form resembling more and more different aspects each other represented between Protestant and Catholic by influence of the second vatican council and ecumenical movement. Recently, symbols are used frequently in inside and outside space of Korean church architecture. However, there are some problems in current situation. Firstly, symbols are used as only decorative meaning. Secondly, misunderstood symbols are used. Thirdly, users are not trained sufficiently to get spiritual meaning and feel the holiness through symbols. For these reasons, the plan of symbols in church architecture is very important. After the world war 1, the architecture of expressionism used symbolic elements to represent the meaning and represent the intention harmonizing with characteristic of religion. This characteristic of expression is represented in German architecture because German invested the church architecture in interior and exterior to rescue uncertainty according to defeat. In the end, looking the flow of time, we can see that many symbols are used to reinforce good relation between God & believers. This paper studied aesthetical number symbols of German church architecture which represent these characteristics very well and also, studied on the meaning of number symbols in modern church architecture by analyzing the meaning and characteristic through images which come to the bible and design concept.
