Abstract Under-tension system is frequently employed for large span structures to reduce the deflection and member size. In this study, micro genetic algorithm is used to find an optimum cross section of truss structures with under-tension cable under transverse loading. Maximum deflection and allowable stress are considered as constraints. The present approach is verified by 10-bar truss example showing good agreements with previous results. In numerical results, The minimum weight design of under-tension structure is performed for various magnitudes of pretension.
