Abstract Superplaticizers and thickners are additives used to control the balance between the fluidity and the stability of self-leveling mortars. This experimental study is intended to find out the optimal ratio of these two additives which minimizes the segregation of the self-leveling mortar during its application, while maintaining the sufficient level of fluidity at the same time. Naphthalene, melamine and polycarbonate-based superplasticizers were tested along with the following choice of thickners: Polysaccharide (PS) and hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC). As a result, the most effective composition of self-leveling mortar turned out to be 0.519% polycarbonate-based superplaticizer with 0.002587% of PS and 0.155844% of HEC in the ratio by the weight of the inorganic binders. This composition not only enhanced the mortar stability without loss of its high-fluidity, but was able to prevent the segregation of material completely.
