Abstract Due to overpopulation in urban areas, the development of underground space has become essential. The greatest change caused by the development of underground space was the development of the means of transportation. In particular, subway has been the best solution to solve a traffic problem in metropolitan cities and overcome the limitation in the use of land. In the process of fast and excessive development, however, quantitative aspect has only been emphasized, ignoring citizens' needs and demands. In other words, most subway development projects have been promoted in terms of traffic management, engineering and finance only without considering subway users' behavior and psychological state. In fact, many subway users experience a sense of closeness and anxiety. In particular, it's difficult for them to have basic understanding of the overall underground space. Therefore, this research has attempted to analyze the spatial-cognitive characteristics of subway station buildings, discover the factors that can enhance spatial awareness and amenities. And this research suggest them as basic data to improve the quality of environment in terms of aesthetics as well as function.
