Abstract |
This paper attempts to find out the architectural characteristics of Francesco Venezia by investigating one of his buildings, the Material Testing Laboratory of IUAV in Mestre(1995-2001) which is near Venice, Italy. The findings in the investigation were then compared with his other representative buildings for the purpose of sorting out the typical concepts and vocabularies of Venezia, which are the crucial factors for the holistic understanding of the architect's artistic and rational world. Following these analyses, this paper illuminates the connection of the Venezia's architecture to Le Corbusier's ideals. Finally, this paper reveals the concept of 'historicity' and 'virtual preexistence' in the Venezia's architecture, and made an interpretation of duality in the essence of his architectural aesthetics, i.e. the coexistence and confrontation between 'romantic' and 'rationality'. |
