Abstract With regards to steel plate slit dampers developed as earthquake-resistant structural members, the required properties for making them usable in X-type braced frames have so far been examined. It was expected that these studies would classify the performance limit of X-type braced frame when using steel plate slit dampers. It is intended in this paper to classify energy absorption capacity of total five X?type braced frames with steel plate slit dampers through full scale experiment. The parameters included in this test are strength ratios and stiffness ratios between main frame and steel plate slit damper. The yield of entire system (main frame+steel plate slit damper) was determined by the yield of steel plate slit damper. Although steel plate slit dampers showed the excellent plastic energy absorption capacity, main frame was confirmed to keep within the elastic region. Finally, when steel plate slit damper was fractured, main frame was confirmed to be within elastic region despite of partially yielding of main frame. Therefore if only steel plate slit damper is replaced, the entire system was confirmed to be able to become normal building.
