Abstract The purpose of this study was to analyze characteristics and types of intermediate space in a large mixed-use complex according to the case studies in Korea and Japan. The study results as follows: The characteristics of an intermediate space in a large mixed-use complex are to stimulate a synergy effect by means of connecting and integrating different functions in the sky, ground, underground. The reason that the mixed-use complex is consisted of various buildings, the intermediate space shows in the between buildings and urban contexts. The functions of intermediate spaces in a large mixed-use complex are walking and staying based on the existing public open spaces. Through the case studies, types of the intermediate spaces come up with a pedestrial connection type, rest type and mixed type and also design elements of types are a skywalk, bridge, deck, pilot, arcade, park, sunken, plaza, footpath.
