Abstract This paper analyzes the relocation causes of the elderly who had moved into apartment houses in urban areas from rural areas. This study was done by interviewing 64 elderly residents in apartment houses in the eastern areas of Jeollanamdo province based on the questionnaires prepared for this purpose. The analysis involves process and motives of relocation, together with living problems before relocation. Through analysis of those items, the relocation causes were extracted. The results suggest that the relocation cause are categorized into potential causes and direct ones. The potential causes are due to three problems which are care, housework and house itself. The direct causes are due to six problems which are psychology, housework, family, economic difficulty, house and the others. In most cases, direct family cases, combined with potential house causes, trigger the movement of the elderly from rural to urban areas.
