Abstract |
The impact of new residential development on the demand for school facilities is based on the average number of public school students generated per dwelling unit. This study aims at developing a mathematical device - the Student Generation Rates(SGR) for evaluating the validity of school establishment in the urban developing sites, which would help more reasonable decision-making for new school construction and the class extension in the existing schools. The student generation rates are calculated as the ratio of students to total dwelling units. In doing so, it surveys the average number of students per dwelling unit in 585 housing sites, including 375,649 dwelling units residing in Incheon Metropolitan City. This study finds out that these rates are significantly different by housing types, school types, dwelling unit size, school choice zones and occupied years. Finally, it proposes a formula for calculating the number of student generating in the new residential development sits. This study would help to plan the proper number of schools in sites and the reasonable expenditure for school facilities, to restrict overbuilding of surplus classes. |
