Abstract This study is to propose effective planning conditions of atrium opening that would improve user's assessment for amenity space and reduce energy load at the same time. Through the simultaneous analysis of openness assessment and energy load, by applying estimation formula concluded in a preceding study, planning conditions of optimum level that would improve synthetic environmental assessment was proposed. Esp-r (Environmental System Performance-reference) program was used to analyze cooling and heating loads in atrium which are greatly influenced by two factors: heat exchange between the outside and the inside air, and solar radiation passing through the glass curtain wall. It was verified through the result of simultaneous assessment of openness and cooling/heating loads that a sense of openness was directly related to planning conditions of atrium opening; on the other hand, as planning conditions of opening increase, energy load decreased at first and then increased or remained constant, however, at some point the planning condition of atrium opening exhibited the minimum energy load.
