Abstract The Japanese houses remaining in Guryongpo area are related to the negative part of Korean history, nevertheless, they seem to have unique cultural value in that they are holding the aspects of Modern period town and architecture which are about to be extinct. As a trial to rediscover their value as Modern cultural heritage, this research investigated on the site and tried to search for the present situations and their characteristics. In consequence, total 51 houses along a street could be found and analyzed with respect to their spatial·architectural changes and characteristics. As a results of this analysis, detailed primary data on them could be constructed and the situations around the changes could be figured out. For all the historic tragedy and changes happened to the site, still it seems worthy to be maintained because it is including rare Modern architectures which are about to be extinct, and the overall streetscape maintaining the sense of Modern town. This unique features have potential to work as great historic resources, thus needs to be dealt with careful governmental policy and citizen activity.
