Abstract Recently, the urban planning has become more important due to increasing demands of sustainable urban development and human-oriented residential environments. This is main reason to require a future strategy to manage the human resources in urban planning area in order to make them correspond to new market circumstances. A systematic and long-term strategy is needed linked with professional education and training in fostering excellent urban planning engineers efficiently. Establishing the engineering career development program(CDP) could be an essential step to provide the basis of these strategies. In this research, we analyzed jobs of urban planning engineers in order to develope CDP considering the importance of well-trained urban planning engineers. Job analysis was conducted employing DACUM method and unit engineering skill matrix. Job analysis results were used for identifying the current status and defining requirements in CDP development. The established CDP should be supported and diffused in association with engineers, engineering companies, related institutes and government, eventually contributing to improving competitiveness of engineering industry.
