Abstract According to the United Nation's classification, Korea is an aging society and progressing toward aged society faster than any other OECD countries. Given this situation, it is very important to prepare housing policy and the appropriate measures for this aging population. It is purpose of this paper to reflect on urban retirement community in the United States and consider design applications for the Korean context. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: First, aged people's housing policy in the United States is operated mainly by private companies and supported by the Federal Government or State Government. Second, we can classify the retirement community into 3 dwelling types. 'Home', 'Villa', and 'Apartment'. Third, to analyze the urban retirement community, four case studies were chosen, Sun City, Arizona, The Village, Florida, University Commons, Michigan. and The Hallmark of B.P.C, New York. The characteristics of each are compared location, activity programs, size, facilities and type of housing with our country cases. Fourth, This article concludes with suggestion of a university linked retirement community.
