Abstract The aims of this study are to verify the rehabilitation characteristics of multi-family housing in Berlin, Germany. To achieve these purposes, the references were reviewed, and the several rehabilitated multi-family housing estates in Berlin were visited. The results of this study are as follows ; (1) The active rehabilitations of public space looks like city street, plaza, and outdoor space are tried in first to make resident friendly space as promenade, green space, and park. (2) The environment friendly rehabilitation methods such as bio-top, reuse of rainfall, a small creek, and green roof are applied, and also tried removal of concrete pavement and reuse of concrete block. (3) The endowments of identity in public street, place, and building are tried using specialized design methods via color, material, and design in building entrance, balcony, side wall of building, and symbolic sculpture. (4) The upgrade and improvement of housing quality through removal(ruckbau) and combination of horizontal or vertical housing units in lease housing estate are tried especially in Hellersdorf, Berlin.
