Abstract This study is aimed to analyze characteristics of fluorescent and LED lightings by measuring and comparing luminous characteristic and habitability and to examine proper illuminance and color temperature of LED by job types in an interior space. This study was conducted in six steps as follows. 1) A full-size mock-up was built to control experiment variables in order to meet the study purpose. 2) Physical features of fluorescent and LED lightings were compared and analyzed. 3) Brightness and fatigue degree of the two lighting types by illuminance and color temperature were compared and analyzed. 4) The proper brightness and color temperature of LED lightings on a work table by job types and the proper brightness and color temperature of LED lightings by mood types were extracted. 5) Emotional image evaluation was conducted for LED lightings by illuminance and color temperature. 6) The relationship between physical quantity and habitability of LED lightings was analyzed. The study result showed that LED lightings are felt brighter than fluorescent lightings as illuminance and color temperature are higher. And LED lightings showed higher fatigue degree than fluorescent lightings as time goes by. In the evaluation of brightness of LED lightings by job types, 600lx in 3000 to 3500k, 400lx in 6000 to 6500k, and 500lx in 4000 to 5500k were proper for an office room. For a meeting room, 600lx in 3000 to 3500k, 400lx in 5000 to 6500k, and 500lx in 4000 to 5000k were proper. For a lounge, 600lx in 3000 to 3500k, 400lx in 5000 to 6500k, and 500lx in 4000 to 5000k were proper. The result of factor analysis in the emotional image evaluation showed two factor axes of "cheerful" and "comfortable", and the quantification type-1 analysis of the evaluation showed that color temperature had the most effect.
