Abstract Energy consumption in residential building sector in Korea takes over 50% of the total building energy consumption. Therefore construction of energy efficient residential building is very important. Korean low energy residential buildings can achieve some financial incentives when they are certified by "building energy rating system". However there is not enough data about the real performance of the certified residential building. Consequently, in this paper, we analyzed the heating energy consumption of the certified buildings by "building energy rating system" and compared the features of the that certifying system to those of "Passive House" certification system in EU. "Passive House" is the most strongest certification system in the world, and we can find out some merits by analyzing that system. For the result, we found some absurdities in the current "building energy rating system" in Korea. The estimated heating energy consumption is not significantly lower than the consumption of conventional residential buildings. For the lack of available data about certified building's energy consumption, it is impossible to definitely conclude the most influential factors. Therefore we conclude that the most urgent task to improve "building energy rating system" is to validate the certification system by performing monitoring certified building's energy performance.
