Abstract This paper clarifies the urban historical position of the Market in Gagyong(開京), the capital city of Goryo(高麗) Dynasty. One of the Architectural Style called ″Haeng-rang(行廊)″ was established in 11th Century. Its form was long and narrow, aligned with the main street, and the housing district and the street where various events and commercial activities occurred, separated and coexisted effectively by it. The market had been limited within a specific area until Goryeo Dynasty when the shops were spread along the street. Especially, dual market system that had been formed through Goryeo Dynasty as well as the architectural style of the commercial facility and the spatial structure of the market meant that the market, just an element of the city, was not accepted just institutionally but was recognized as a symbolic element of the capital city as well as its nation. This research can became one basis for understanding the positioning and characteristics of urban history of Gaegyong through the market.
