Abstract Urban design was made to fulfill the needs of urban integrated space and built environment by principles of collective buildings-meaning. However, general urban design projects in Korea show the weakness of collective buildings-meaning that forms urban space and the intension to exaggerate it in words. Therefore, this study will clarify the limitations of urban design by analysing the relationship that it establishes with architecture and that this is continuation or scale-down model of the rigid ways how modern city was made. And then it will deduct the characteristics of integrated urban space design is needed as the alternatives. For this purpose, 1)analysing the relationship between the modern methods of environment-making and architecture, 2)examining the fundamental meaning of urban design as the alternatives, focusing on the relationship with architecture, 3)analysing the limitations of wide-practiced urban design in Korea, focusing on the methods of urban redevelopment project in Garibong1, Seoul 4)clarifying the characteristics of alternative urban redevelopment project, Special Landscape designer, in Hongjae-dong and Bukgajwa-dong, will be fulfilled. This is a preceding study for forming the concepts of the need and sustainability on the next study theme, 'Integrated urban design with architecture'.
