Abstract Mean skin temperature can predict human thermal sensation, but this is difficult to use in field experiment, because it has to measure several body points inside of clothes and many thermistor wires have to be connected from body points to a data logger. Based on this background, the primary objective of this study is to find the local skin points which can predict thermal sensation effectively and to explores how local skin temperature correlates with thermal sensation for the development of portable thermal sensation measurement tool. Temperature of back of the hand and fingertip was selected as point that represents human overall-body thermal sensation and compared with mean skin temperature. The results show that temperatures of back of the hand and fingertip were correlated with human thermal sensation and thermal preference. So, these local skin temperature can be used for prediction of thermal sensation and preference.
