Abstract In this paper, architectural surface is regarded as a relation surface with frame. The reason is that exterior space has been separated from surface and the boundary for the exterior space is needed. In architectural tradition, the interior and the exterior were in unity. But such a unity has been broken in contemporary architecture. It changes the meaning of surface. Generally, surface regulates space, but the relation is reversed. In contemporary architecture, space makes surface. The consequence is that the surface interrupts the communication between inner and outer space. This paper attempts to present an alternative with the concept of frame.
