Abstract Korean Building Code-2009(KBC) recommends the use of dynamic analysis to estimate wind loads acting on buildings. Since the wind loads are dependent on the size of buildings, it is necessary to establish wind load estimation considering building size effects. In the paper, major codes and standards around the world, including analytical procedures to account for the characteristics of buildings, were investigated. Limitations of wind load estimation in KBC were discussed. Two types of procedures for estimating wind loads were proposed to be adopted in KBC: (a) dynamic procedure and (b) static procedure. Detailed formulae for three building categories - high-rise, mid-rise and low-rise buildings - were presented. In order to validate the proposed procedures, wind loads on buildings of various sizes, obtained by wind tunnel studies, were compared to the estimates by the analytical methods.
