Abstract Modern Architecture is generally regarded as the architecture developed from 18-19th century to the early 20th century with reasonable and industrial environment, that is completely different from traditional architecture in western society. However, the meaning of Modern Architecture in non-western society is so different and hard to define because it is usually mixed with non-modern elements, such as tradition, regionalism, and humanism. German philosopher, Jurgen Habermas's idea of ‘Modernity’ is very effective tool to explain this case because he advocate the meaning of modernity not as the severance from tradition but as the continuity and transformation of tradition within critical view. In the context, this paper attempt to analyze the meaning of modernity in the architecture of Busan City since 1960's with reinterpretation of Habermas's idea of ‘Modernity’.
