Abstract This study examines interactive effects between visual elements, features and impressions in relation to a streetscape and seasons, and attempts to discover their influence on people's visual preferences. Using one of the environmental psychology research methods called caption evaluation method, an analysis on interactive effects between visual elements, features and impressions in relation to a streetscape perceived by 45 college students as they walked down the street of Namwon city and seasons as well as their relationship with visual preferences was carried out. The result of the analysis showed that all three factors of a visual elements, features, and impressions had interactive effects with different seasons, thus affecting visual preferences as well. In analyzing the interactive effects between visual elements and seasons, the category of nature represented the highest preference for spring, summer, and autumn; the category of human represented the highest preference for winter. Natural and traditional architecture/space represented high preference as well. The result of the analysis of visual features showed that appearance turned out to be a critical factor for all seasons in determining visual preference, and there was variance in visual preferences according to different categories. The analysis of visual impression showed that the category of aesthetic sense represented the highest visual preference for spring and autumn; the category of five senses represented the highest visual preference for summer; and the category of human nature represented the highest visual preference for winter. Again, different categories showed varying visual preferences. The result of this study can be utilized in deciding which factors among visual elements, features, and impressions to consider in designing a streetscape for different seasons.
