Abstract |
In the field of architecture, the form is one of the most important element. Thus it opens a discussion of design integrity. As the concept of time and space change in philosophy and other broad field of study, the architecture also evolved in response to mutating society. In the 1960s, architects have introduced the concept of Russian Formalism which affected the wide range of studies for seeking freedom in the form of architecture. Since 1980s, when Self-reference, one of the formalism's attributes has began to emphasized, autonomy in the architecture became a reality. The self-reference in the architecture intends to create a form through its self-directed and regulated by interrelationship within the inner form of architecture. It is the same concept as the theory of morphogenesis. Today self-reference is even more stressed with advancement of digital technology in architectural practice. With implementation of a diagram as a concept of abstract machine of Gilles Deleuze, self-reference is recognized as a principal of architectural generation. This study demonstrates the relationship of utilizing self-reference in the diagram. Contemporary architects apply this principal to create free-form generation, fundamental application, and direction of projects. Therefore, this study focus on how the self-reference as shown in the diagram is being used as a tool by contemporary architects to work on a free-form generation and to provide the fundamental reflection and direction when the architects use the diagram as a tool. |
