Abstract Natural light is one of the most important themes in architecture. Since the Industrial Revolution, however, the development of building materials and convenience of artificial light caused the decline of metaphysical meaning of the light, and the essential value of the light has got forgotten gradually. Eventually the loss of value of the light in architecture endangered the sense of space and form. Thus as part of a study on essential value of lost light, this paper aims at contemplating qualitative properties of the light revealed in Alvaro Siza’s works. Especially Aveiro Library is the most representative example that Siza considered natural light as the most significant element. In the Library the light is introduced, arguably, in seven methods and each of them enables indirect light to flow into the inner space evenly. Siza also satisfied functional requirements and realized spaces of phenomenological experience. The purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics and meanings of the light in Aveiro Library and to speculate a part of Siza’s architecture through the quality. Considering the position of Siza in the present architecture, this is not just an analysis on one architect’s works, but a study on sustainable development of modern architecture.
