Abstract Some scholars suggested that online multiuser virtual environments can potentially entice creative collaborative design, but this argumentation rests on theoretical assumptions. We still do not know how use of online multiuser virtual environment influences results of creative collaboration. To investigate this question, we analyzed a case of collaborative architectural design studio hosted in an online multiuser virtual environment called Second Life, which provide a shared synchronous built environment experienced through user’s avatars. Using surveys and interviews, we found the use of the online multiuser virtual environment is positively related to novelty of form and appropriateness of user’s activities by supporting self and peer evaluation. However, its first-person view of avatars often hinders the convergence of forms among collaborators.
