Abstract With the recent increased expectation and demand of a double-skin system, many studies have focused on the physical transport phenomena in the double skin systems. As a follow-up of the previous studies (Park et al, 2004; Yoon et al, 2009), this study aims to achieve implementation of context-awareness augmented reality and a gesture pattern technique for the double skin system. The augmented reality is synchronized with two representations that describe a physical real-world (the physical double-skin system) and a virtual computer-generated imagery using ARtag composed of a Marker and a webcam. In particular, this study shows a occupant’s capability to select his/her preferred control mode or to monitor relevant information (temperature, energy flow) through the gesture pattern technique. In other words, occupants can see physical information or performance information through a webcam hosted by a local data-logging computer. With this development to be applied to any building system, occupants can learn about their building and can control informatively their building environment with augmented images in real-time. This feature will enhance occupant’s comfort, productivity as well as contribution to building energy reduction.
